Both Pompeii and Herculaneum are UNESCO World Heritage sites. They were both covered in ash from the Vesuvius volcanic eruption in AD79, and have since been excavated to reveal the wonders that you see today. Pompeii was a commercial town, while Herculaneum was a holiday resort. The top right and bottom middle photos that are shown here are of Herculaneum and the other three are of Pompeii.
